October may provide brilliant color in the landscape but it also signals an end of another growing season. Let’s look at some of the things needed to be done in the landscape.

Dahlias can remain in the ground until after frost. Cut off the stems six inches above the ground and lift carefully, for the tubers are brittle and break off easily. Discard any that do. Place the clumps in flats, stem side down, and let them dry off before storing. Just before storing cut off the fine roots and cut the stem back to within an inch or two of the crown. They are best stored in a cool place (about 40 degrees) but may be stored at a warmer temperature if covered with peatmoss or sand. Line the storage boxes with paper. A dusting of sulphur before storing will prevent rot. Be sure to tie labels to the clumps so you will know what is what next year.

Tuberous begonias are lifted after the foliage has yellowed, but don’t remove the foliage until it is dry. Remove the dried stems and clean off the dry soil. Store the tubers in flats in a warm place (50 to 60 degrees) and cover them with peatmoss. They need good circulation of air to prevent rot.

Cannas should be lifted after the first frost and stored in a cool place. To prevent shriveling cover them with dry peatmoss or sand. Many, however, no longer store canna roots over winter, preferring to buy live plants each spring.

Lift Gladiolus corms as the leaves begin to turn yellow. After lifting, cut the foliage to within three inches of the corms and then let them dry off in the sun if possible for a little while each day. When completely dry, dust them with an insecticide to prevent thrips injury. Store them uncovered in a cool place.

Ismenes (Peruvian daffodils) must be lifted very carefully to preserve the root system. So, dig deeply. Spread out the plants indoors to dry. Remove the tops but not the roots. Store them uncovered in a place where the temperature will not go below 50 degrees.

Montbretias may be left in the ground if given a heavy covering of leaves. If lifted they should be removed from the ground in clumps with the soil clinging to them. Don’t let the soil dry out.

Tuberose bulbs should be lifted in clumps and dried off for storage in a warm dry place. Divide into single bulbs during the winter or use a second year without dividing the clumps.

In The Greenhouse

Repotting is one of the round-the-year jobs. When in doubt about the need for repotting, knock the plant like the watermelon peperomia out of the pot. If the ball is well covered with roots it is time for repotting. Don’t repot flowering plants that have flower buds forming. Soak new flower pots in a tub of water for at least a half hour before they are used.

Freesias that were potted and placed in the coldframe should now have several inches of growth. Bring them into a cool part of the greenhouse before frost. For better results give them a weekly feeding.

Watering. Don’t just turn on the hose and water everything in sight. Water plants when they need it. When in doubt give the pot a sharp knock with the handle of your pocketknife and if the pot rings water is needed. A dull thud indicates the soil is still damp. Soil in benches that feels dry and somewhat crumbly needs a thorough soaking with the hose or watering pot.

Now is the time to let go of hazy ideas regarding watermelon peperomia. Click on the link to visit http://www.plant-care.com/watermelon-peperomia.html.

It is easier to understand what unity does than to explain what it is. Any design – a small dish garden, cut-flower composition, living-room decor, patio planting, landscape – has unity if the whole hangs together to make one pleasing picture. Without unity a design “goes off in all directions,” has a restless, disorganized, discordant effect.

Not quite the same as unity, but an important part of it, is harmony – a restful quality created when all parts of a design or decorative effect add up to one style or mood. An extreme example may illustrate the point. Setting an urn of clean, stark contemporary lines beside an ornate, Victorian garden seat would be inharmonious; each style is foreign to and unsympathetic with the other. But a low fence is in harmony with the rose that clambers over it; vining plants can unite harmoniously the upright plants in a window box with the box itself.

There are innumerable techniques for unifying a design, of which the following five are probably basic.

1. To have unity, a design usually has only one focal point or center of interest. For example, a vine or other planting and its container can be the object of interest against a wall; or the vine can be so arranged that it supports a center of interest, like a fireplace. Any attempt to use it for both purposes can result in either chaos or complete lack of interest.

2. To have unity, a decorative effect should be designed to hold the eye inside the picture. The flowing lines of vines are particularly effective here. Training a vine around a large window, for example, holds the eye and keeps it from wandering off.

3. To have unity, the elements of a design can often be arranged so that they interlock or overlap. Here again, vines are useful. Without a vine planted at its base, a tall shrub may seem entirely separate from the tub it is planted in; when a vine overlaps the container below and the shrub above, the two are tied together.

4. To have unity, the important parts of a design must be in pleasing relative proportion or scale. The vine selected to blend a shrub like yucca branched and its tub should be neither so small that the shrub overpowers it, nor so large and bold that it dwarfs the shrub.

5. To have unity, a design or decorative effect should be executed with restraint, moderation, good taste. Too many elements create a disturbing, helter-skelter, cluttered appearance. So a single wall bracket or hanging basket, or a matching or harmonious pair, is generally preferable to a varied assortment.

Create your own unity in the landscape with vines!

If you have a lawn, you probably wondered often enough why you keep up with such a useless, time-consuming and expensive piece of outdoor landscaping when you could instead have a healthy and productive organic vegetable garden. Now that even the White House is starting a garden, it could be the right time for you as well!

Don’t be put off by the idea of organic vegetable gardening being a strenuous and unrewarding physical activity involving lots of tilling. If you follow this easy guide and some easy principles, you won’t have to do any tilling and you’ll turn your lawn into a garden with real ease.

Start by marking off the area for your organic vegetable garden with string. The White House’s vegetable garden is about thirty feet by thirty feet square, which is enough to feed a large family. But to start, you could do with a quarter of that space. Water the area thoroughly.

Cover the area with a six inch thick mix of sand or gravel, old grass clippings, soil, and some ready-made organic compost or manure. This will ensure a solid nutrient base for your organic vegetables to grow on in years to come. Cover everything with cardboard, or with several layers of newspaper. This cover will eventually become compost too.

Next you need to build a simple raised bed, made of planks, which you will put on top of the newspaper or cardboard. In due time the paper will decompose and become part of the organic base, but at first you will need it as a barrier between the early plants and the high-quality soil that you will now add.

Now fill the frame or frames with organic compost and topsoil. In the beginning you will have to buy the compost, but after your organic vegetable garden has gotten underway you will be able to make your own. Add some porous pebbles or vermiculite to the mix for aeration.

Next, let everything be for a month or so. The lower layer will decompose, insects will arrive, the grass underneath will die off, and the whole area will naturally turn into a healthy and fertile ground for your organic vegetable garden without any need for tilling, ploughing or other hard work.

Now you can start your kitchen garden, either using seedlings from other plants or from a nursery, or by growing vegetables from seed. In the latter case, it is best to use certified organic seeds. There are several online retailers that sell them if you can’t find them in your area.

To make sure that you’ll enjoy the produce don’t just pick the most typical plants for an organic vegetable garden, go for the ones that you like and that often turn up in your kitchen, and don’t be afraid to leave any popular plants out. But make sure that you plant according to season.

If you have kids, make sure to involve them in the new garden from the start. They will love it and it will also be a great educational experience for the. Besides, you are going to spend more time with them and get help tending your organic vegetable garden.

While you’re at it, you should start a compost heap. You can use a plastic composter, which are often available for free from local government, or build a couple of wooden frames to start two compost heaps. This will allow you to supply your organic vegetable garden with fresh soil and nutrients by recycling kitchen waste and lawn clippings.

With flood lights, less is more. Compact fluorescent fixtures are perfect for lighting up outside areas for longer periods of time – creating just the perfect amount of light to give your exterior a relaxed, warm feel while giving you that additional security. As a general rule of thumb, incandescent outdoor flood lights provide the best look for the exterior, cost less, and last longer. Quartz halogen is a good choice when you want to focus on specific objects on the property, such as a plant or statue. Metal halides are the best for extreme temperatures and for moisture resistance.

Leaves – Falling leaves keep us busy raking but don’t destroy them. Leaves and pine straw can be used to advantage for mulching shrubs. Cap the loose leaf mulch with a light layer of pine straw to keep it from blowing away in windy weather.

Continue feeding through the fall but in a different way. Use slow-acting fertilizers such as manures, bone-meal or superphosphate. Use the latter in soils that are already non-acid. Manure on shrub borders, rose beds and bulb plantings will slowly feed the developing root systems through the winter but rake the manure from tulip beds in early spring as soon as the leaves show through the ground. Manure in direct contact with the foliage causes disease.

Vegetables – As soon as beans, corn or other crops are harvested destroy the old plants. Then, dig and pulverize well the vacated rows for fall and winter crops. Add a complete plant food. Use one pound for each 25 feet of row or 4 pounds for each 100 square feet. October planting should include carrots, leek, lettuce, kale, rape, spinach, mustard, Swiss chard, radish and turnips.

For the Lower South plant beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, celery, collards, cauliflower, Swiss chard, endive, kale, kohl rabi, lettuce, onion, radish, rutabaga, spinach.

Southern experiment stations have been testing varieties of head lettuce. Great Lakes and Imperial 847 are two of the best both for commercial culture and home gardens and also for arboricola standard. For novelty, try Bibb for crisp, delicious, dark green heads, small enough for individual servings. I have used it as border plantings.

Plants to set out now include cabbage and collards and if you can get them, broccoli and lettuce.

Herb gardens are becoming popular. Get a good book on herb culture and another that tells how to use herbs in cooking. Then, select the types you want to grow, and plant the seeds this month. Here are some that do well in the South : horehound, lavender, sweet marjoram, rosemary, thyme, balm, summer savory, anise, sage, sweet basil, borage, caraway, coriander and sweet fennel.

Before you start putting a plant in the ground to create your dream landscape you need to do some studying, you should begin to sharpen your critical eye. When passing a neighbor’s garden, look it over. Criticize it, get critical and decide how you would improve its landscape, you will soon shine new light of the design principles you learn from just looking with a critical eye and asking – how can I improve this.ed. (Do not rush in to tell the neighbor they might resent it. )

This is good exercise for the mind. While you do it, you will become familiar with the good and bad points of garden arrangements as they actually appear. In this way you will build a mental storehouse of gardening ideas on which you can call when designing your own property.

Plot Plan

Once you have pulled some ideas together it is time to begin putting together your plot plan. Now you will have to sit down and begin to draw a plan of your property.

You do not have to be an artist to make an accurate plan. The two essentials are: careful measurement of your plot and of the buildings on it, and an accurate scaling down of these measurements; secondly, exact placement of the dots which represent the centers of the plants precisely where you want them to be. Parenthetically, we, might stress again that you should save money by avoiding overcrowding. This is the easiest mistake for you to make; indeed, it is the most common error of professionals.

Do Not Copy

You have been warned – Do Not slavishly imitate your neighbors’ gardens. The idea is to pull from others – inspiration – take your ideas and improvements to create your own blueprint for what you will do to your garden. As for me, i prefer to have air cleaning plants to be unique. Carbon copies of neighbors ideas and gardens are the last thing you want as the result of your effort.

Our hope is to give you the necessary tools for planning and executing a fine garden. If you follow the approach outlined above, you will be able to think clearly about your property. You will regard it as a personal challenge. The information you have acquired will provide weapons that will help you to meet the challenge and to make an individual, unique setting for your home.

Now you can remove the confusion in your mind on the topic of air cleaning plants. Drop by today at http://www.plant-care.com/indoor-plants-clean-air-1.html.

To get rid of gophers from your lawn, garden or field can be a frustrating process, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If only you could find someone who had tried all the different methods already and then gave their run down of what the most effective methods of removal are.

I have lived with the frustration of gophers in my garden and it wasn’t until I found someone that had done all the research for me that I found a solution that worked for me. In a nutshell, you need to educate yourself about these creatures, what their habits and behaviors are, find out what gets rid of them for good and what thousands of other people have used and had success with.

As a gopher digs under the surface of your lawn there are a few damaging effects that they are having on more than just the visual landscape. Firstly, the piles of dirt that they push out of their tunnels, are fresh soil for weeds to take root, and the vegetation under the piles of dirt is damaged. When burrowing, the gophers pull up roots and expose them. Rocks can also be exposed which pose harm to any garden machinery being used.

There are many ways that you can try to get rid of gophers. Here’s just a few of the more popular ones: *Trapping – this is certainly the most common method used. However it may take a bit of practice learning to set the trap correctly and then you will need to get rid of the body. *Exclusion – using small mesh fencing or plastic netting, you could protect a portion of your garden if there are particular plants that you want to make sure stay safe. *Gassing & Flooding – with both of these methods, gophers have been known to retreat to a section of the burrow and then block off the tunnel. *Poison pellets – this is probably the easiest option, but care must be taken to ensure the safety of other animals (such as pet dogs or cats). And you may have to deal with the gopher body if they decide to come above ground to die. *Repellents – you can buy synthetic products that have the odor of gopher predators.

The method of getting rid of gophers is not so important as whether it is successful or not! I found a method that was both fool-proof and has kept the gophers away still. I’ve written a blog where I talk about my experiences and the help I got.

If you are tired of fighting this battle with gophers (or moles or vols) on your land, you are not alone. I’ve written about my experiences and what I did to Get Rid Of Gophers. This site www.GopherRemoval.info will give you access to all the information about these pests and how to get rid of them.

Growing your own herbs in an Italian herb garden at home provide a huge amount of possibilities. As far as you know, some of the most famous and tastiest herbs in the world come from the Italian herb garden in Italy. Some of the best cuisines come from Italy and are famous in part for their herbs.

The most commonly used herb garden in Italy is the herb basil. It has a lot of benefits not only to humans but also to the other garden plants. Its additional flavor to Italian cuisines is really loved and aside from that it also improves the taste of peppers and tomatoes if you plant basil next to them. Basil also can repel flies and mosquitoes in the garden.

Also used in an Italian herb garden is Parsley, which is a relatively hard herb plant to grow but it is useful in not only Italian dishes but many other types of cuisines. Many generations ago before, there were also planted breath mints in an Italian herb garden. However, it was found that eating fresh, raw parsley after a meal eradicated the bad breath left over from enjoying a flavorful cuisine. The tradition arose to serve parsley on a small dish after the meal. The tradition lives today by using parsley as a garnish on a variety of meals.

Oregano, another herb, sprouts pretty little purple flowers which is believed to be so flavorful if its flowers appear. It is not only flavorful in taste but also very decorative in Italian herb garden.

Fennel is a famous part of an Italian herb garden for its seeds that grace and enhance the flavors of Italian sausage. The interesting thing about fennel is that the plant looses its flavor as it matures. It is a perennial plant that should be divided and replanted every few years to savor its flavor.

Another herb plant beneficial to the garden is rosemary which is a perennial plant that helps in attracting the bees and is sensitive to frost. Rosemary is a large shrub that sprouts pretty little blue flowers.

Probably the most used herb in an Italian herb garden and in Italy’s cuisines is garlic. No Italian herb garden would be complete without this useful herb. Garlic gloves can be planted and will thrive in just about any garden with very little attention. They can be stored to be used at a later time after they are harvested by freezing them or pickling them to store in the refrigerator.

Sage is used in a variety of Italian dishes from meats to salads. New shoots of the plant contain the most flavors so it is recommended not to let sage plants to get to woody by keeping them trim. New shoots will be encouraged to grow. Italian herb garden lovers are aware that Sage can be harvested only after it blooms.

Before planning to own an Italian herb garden, be sure that you can take care of the herbs and apply them with their proper uses. You should look at the herbs not only as additional flavors to dishes but beyond that. It is really great feeling if you have your own Italian garden at home, it is like having an Italian hillside as your own.
